Hey Everyone -

With launch upon us, we're realizing that assessing cases for and approving DM-gated languages isn't going to be sustainable at this time. Over the coming 3-6 weeks, we are going to be ideating on and developing a system to make a good deal of the DM-gated languages available through mechanical means as a form of investment pursuit (more specifics on this to come in the future).

What this means for you if you're desiring a DM-gated language: For now, you'll be waiting until that is completed and implemented. We ask that you be flexible where possible if this was originally a key element of your concept as we spin this design up. We will attempt to communicate which DM-gated languages will be accessible via this system, and which won't be as soon as possible. We will close up DM tickets for these in the next 24 hours.

Some context (and some this is how we view languages on TDN, not necessarily how "x" book might imply or state that languages are handled):
  • Our objective with querying DMs initially was to validate legitimacy of backstory concepts and approve based on that. However in practice this has turned into a lot of subjective discussion that, frankly, is better spent fixing and improving on the server itself.
    • Similar to how we adjusted course on our original concept for PRCs, we are doing similar here for DM-Gated Languages.
  • Languages on TDN are intended to be something that is a key element of how characters approach the world, even if those moments of language utilization are between one another. Simply granting the language doesn't do a very good job of stating the efficacy of speech that someone might have for a particular language.
    • As an example, Arcane spellcasters might be familiar with runes that exist in a language for spellcasting purposes, but wouldn't say "I enjoy butter on my toasted bread" in Draconic.

Once we have more to share we will ensure the community is made aware of it. We apologize for the modification on our approach here and any frustration caused, we feel confident we'll be able to develop something that is a satisfying experience for pursuing a unique language for your character.

-TDN Team
