Hey staff.

I’ve had time to ponder during TDN’s downtime and realised that I have a concern regarding the Bladesinger Prestige Class.

I’ll start with saying that I initially thought this class looked very fun and even toyed with the idea of going for it myself, however I can also see it potentially becoming something of a headache.

Elven Bladesingers are known as dedicated heroes of their people. They’re welcome everywhere in elven communities, and their word weighs a lot.

Even with the best intent of having the players of this PrC as merely apprentices, I think it’d be treated much like the real thing. As per the setting, everyone else is far removed, starting their journey as level 2 nobodies.
Bladesingers are vastly different than a local guard captain in terms of political strength. They're also supposed to be extraordinarily skilled at fighting, something that isn't really doable without class imbalance.

If you decide to leave the class as it is and potentially grandfather it, you risk having a couple of elven heroes kicking about until such a time as they choose to retire.

I'm of the opinion that this prestige class in its current form doesn’t fit in TDN’s setting.

I would love to see it remade into a custom class, like an elven version of eldritch knight, and leave the real Bladesinger sightings for DM events.
As a custom class it would still be a unique thing for other elves to meet, and a great reward for good roleplay. That way you could have the best of both worlds.

Thank you for reading.

Hello!

As with most, if not all, classes in D&D, TDN's base lore strays from what is considered typical for class identities with the lower magic setting and The Longest Year's influence.

While Bladesinger isn't likely to change mechanically, we are looking at writing custom lore for it to better place it within the space of TDN's narrative.

Bladesingers are iconic in elf culture in FR and we don't wish to remove that aspect; the goal is to appropriately tone down their impact on the world around them, similar to the idea that nor all elf wizards are able to be High Mages, for example.

Bladesingers themselves on server launch will be restricted to a few NPCs that will take on apprentices eventually, and rest assured they will be handled with proper care for their significance, even with our own low magic take on them.
